CROSS TATTOOS

The cross tattoo is a very popular design to wear and it has many meanings and designs. It is instantly recognisable whatever size it is drawn and can vary greatly in size, often based on where it is on the body. It is also one that can be made very basic or very complicated based on the wearer’s wishes and the tattooist’s skills. In fact it can be drawn basically and then can be made more complicated as time goes on.

The cross can be to represent religion and can take a religious theme, often one featuring a figure such as Jesus on the cross or by it. This is a time when the cross tattoo can start simply and then can have pieces added to it in order to expand it, in the religious case the design can be expanded and other religious symbols such as angels and prayer books can be added over time. Also if you have a simple cross that is coloured one colour it’s possible to then expand it to a bigger cross.

The cross tattoo can be one of no religious significance at all, even if it shows a fairly religious style. It can in fact have to significance beyond its own style and shape; it’s also a popular one for a first tattoo as it can be fairly basic. It can be a simple cross of two straight lines, one of the above designs or even a more ancient design such as one with Celtic origins.

These designs tend to have arms of the cross the same style and the same length as opposed to the more religious crosses which have the vertical piece crossed by the horizontal piece nearer the top. Of course as there are no real rules to making the cross tattoo appear as a cross bar having one piece across the other.

As the cross is such an ancient sign it has many variations beyond those mentioned and also it has appeared many times on many people. This history makes it hard to be original with the design but with some research and with some playing around with ideas you may find something unusual if not something unique. By adding other things to the basic cross tattoo you can maybe get something rarer or more unique.

As the design can start basically it’s something you can start with to see how you cope with the process of the actual process of the tattooing. If you then find you are OK with having the work done you can expand the cross tattoo or have something else done.
