One of the most popular Western motifs for a tattoo is the cross.  Sure, you’ll see a lot of Chinese dragons, ying-yang symbols, Shinto temples, cherry blossoms, and Buddhist images taken from China to India, and everywhere in between.  However, many of these symbols are misunderstood in Europe and North America.  When it comes to a cross, however, the symbolism simply cannot be misunderstood.

Even though the symbolism of lower back cross tattoos is well understood, the cross itself is not a simple, common image.  A quick survey of crosses yields almost as many different types of crosses as there are different variations of Christianity.  Actually, there may be more crosses.  Some of the more popular crosses include the Maltese cross, the Celtic cross, the three barred cross of Eastern churches, and the simpler “T” crosses most common in the Western churches.

These crosses even by themselves are almost as mysterious to those of us who are not familiar with them as the Eastern symbols.  This level of mystery and misunderstanding definitely warrants some additional research. Lower back cross tattoos ultimately are going to be a reflection of what the cross means to the wearer.  So, what do the different interpretations of the cross mean, and how close to your meaning are these meanings?  This research can help you narrow down to the cross you want, or can at least eliminate some options.

Another point to consider when you are looking at lower back cross tattoos is what is your own personal religious tradition?  Will you choose to represent your own personal religious background?  These are fine selections also.

So, once you’ve decided on which cross you want, the next step is to figure out what else you want with it.  Will it be just a plain cross?  Will you turn it into a crucifix?  Should there be a crown of thorns?  How about backgrounds?  Will the cross stand alone, or will it be part of an entire landscape scene?  Lower back cross tattoos give you plenty of room to work with, so you can blend your tattoo in with other art that you already have.  Your choice of colors will also be critical in having this tattoo fit in, and be a personal creation just for you.  Finally, work with your artist to make sure your hard thought out design can be implemented precisely the way you want it to be done.
